We were thrilled to host a webinar with Wood Mackenzie’s Chris Seiple, 38 North Solution’s Katherine Hamilton and our very own Hilary Pearson on Wednesday as the trio walked through the Inflation Reduction Ac (IRA), how it will impact deployment of renewables and how we can ensure our existing power grid can handle the transition.

“This is not a future problem — this is a very real problem today” — Chris Seiple of Wood Mackenzie speaking about the backlog of wind capacity and curtailment.

As we heard on the webinar, the IRA will invest nearly $370 billion of loans, grants, and tax credits into clean energy and climate programs with a considerable focus on utility scale wind energy and solar power growth. And thankfully, because of the IRA, America has an opportunity to establish a role as the leader in a new, global net-zero economy. Which is great news. The problem is, today’s bulk power system can’t handle even its existing loads, costing ratepayers billions in congestion costs. With an existing interconnection backlog of 1.4 terawatts, we already have our work cut out for us if we are to meet 2030 climate goals. The concern with the IRA, of course, is whether the law will exacerbate the problem.

The group tackled this topic and spoke about solutions to the problem in this one-hour event, which also featured a Q&A from the audience made up of mostly utility and renewable energy executives!
