LineVision's Q4 2024 Newsletter

2024 ushered in a new era of load growth driven by AI, manufacturing, and electrification. A new Grid Strategies report has forecasted an annual projected growth of around 3% over the next five years compared to less than 1% annual growth in the first two decades of this century. While 3% growth may sound low, it would require six times the planning and construction of new generation and transmission capacity.
Building new lines to accommodate all that capacity takes time, so it's more important than ever that we use all the tools in the toolbox to serve this load. The energy industry's ability to do so while maintaining affordable, reliable service for all other consumers is linked to our country's economic competitiveness and geopolitical standing.
We are proud to be one of the tools in that toolbox and look forward to more exciting partnerships in 2025!

Virtual Panels

If you missed our data center webinar featuring Brian George (Federal Lead for Energy Market Development at Google) and Brian Janous (co-founder of Cloverleaf Infrastructure and former Microsoft) sharing perspectives on data centers, grid capacity, and the need for innovation, it’s available on YouTube now.

You can also visit our blog for a full recap.

LineVision's SVP,
Alex Houghtaling
took part in a virtual panel hosted by Green Deal Ukraїna and in partnership with CurrENT Europe and the Renewables Grid Initiative. The virtual event explored the crucial role that innovative grid technologies can play in securing energy supply to Ukraine in the coming years.

Alex presented use cases for dynamic line ratings to provide essential grid support to Ukraine. An outline of practical steps to strengthen electricity links with Western neighbors was also discussed.

The full webinar recording is available on YouTube.

Whitepaper Feature

S2G Ventures released a whitepaper on The AI Opportunity: Unlocking Climate Solutions and Productivity in a Volatile World. LineVision was featured as a solution to optimizing grid management using AI-powered insights and touted as the country's largest dynamic line rating deployment.

Regulatory Roundup

  • FERC issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANOPR), proposing new rules that would require utilities to deploy DLR on highly-congested transmission lines.
  • The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) passed a resolution encouraging the U.S. Congress to appropriate more funding towards programs that support GETs and high performance conductor deployment.
  • Massachusetts passed a sweeping climate bill that incentivizes innovative technologies like GETs, requiring the state energy siting agency to maximize the efficiency of the existing transmission grid before approving new infrastructure, and requiring the utilities to evaluate GETs in any investment decisions.
  • The DOE announced about $4.2 billion in funding through Round 2 of the GRIP Program including a number of grants to states and projects that will implement Dynamic Line Rating and other GETs projects.
