“We know that there's a lot of load growth happening throughout the country and in Nevada specifically finding every little megawatt of capacity out of the transmission system is super important… This project lays the foundation for increased grid resilience, increased transmission capacity, and jobs for Nevadans.”
Scott Kaufmann, Vice President of Transmission
Case Studies
National Grid in the UK faced increasing offshore wind curtailments and interconnection challenges, resulting in congestion costs to the operator and consumers. LineVision’s DLR was deployed across critical circuits and boundaries near Wales and London, optimizing transmission capacity to improve system operability. The DLR project has been successful in optimizing transmission capacity, resulting in yearly projected cost savings of over $40 million to National Grid and its customers.

DLR was implemented on a crucial 69kV transmission line connecting a generation outlet in Ohio that was experiencing frequent thermal overload. LineVision's DLR on a 69kV Ohio transmission line identified a half-mile heavily vegetated section as the thermal constraint, with DLR values falling below the current static assumptions. This insight allowed for targeted reconductoring of only one section, which would cost $400,000 and a one-week outage, instead of a $1.63 million full reconductor and five weeks of outages. This precise capital allocation allowed for a positive capacity gain from the static rating and freed up resources for other critical projects.

DLR provided 43% capacity enhancement, 2.5 months of construction avoided, at 7.6% the cost of reconductoring. The project has the potential to unlock additional carrying capacity as an alternative to certain system upgrades and integration of large commercial customers as well as renewable energy.

Avangrid partnered with LineVision to pilot DLR on two congested 230 kV transmission lines, supplying 500 megawatts of wind generation in New York. DLR implementation led to a 17% average capacity gain, with capacity exceeding seasonal ratings over 85% of the time. This optimization helps NYSEG and RG&E improve reliability, cut congestion costs, and accelerate generation integration. DLR insights have also enhanced Ambient-Adjusted Ratings (AAR) within the EMS, improving throughput capabilities in current and future AAR software.
